Details

This 1994 Lillehammer sweater is a modern update to Dale of Norway's celebrated Olympic sweater designed for the 1994 winter games in Lillehammer Norway. Today's version is knit with a softer yarn, and an updated fit while the T-sleeves preserve the traditional sweater silhouette.

Indigo, Off White, and Bottle Green give the original Olympic pattern rich color and strong definition without losing its unmistakable retro character.

Design Notes

Look closely because there’s a lot happening here. The pattern is populated by figures and symbols from Norse mythology, including Frøya, Odin riding Sleipner, the ravens Hugin and Munin, and Yggdrasil, the evergreen world tree.

Featured Symbols and Figures

~ Frøya, the goddess of love and fertility, with the ability to foresee the future.

~ Odin, the most powerful and wisest of the gods. He is riding Sleipner, the fastest horse in the world.

~ Two ravens, Hugin and Munin, symbolizing thought and recollection, one pointing forward, the other backwards.

~ Yggdrasil, the evergreen world tree, keeping the world up, with branches reaching to the sky and roots stretching down into the underworld.

History

Originally created as the official sweater for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, this design became one of Dale of Norway’s most recognizable creations. Vintage originals became sought-after finds, and hand knitters continued recreating the celebrated pattern long after the Olympic flame went out.

This edition stays remarkably faithful to the original artwork while updating the shape, yarn, and colors for today.

Perfect For

The Olympic and Winter Sports Enthusiast: This isn’t merely Olympic-inspired. It brings back the official design created for Lillehammer 1994, one of Norway’s most memorable Winter Olympic moments.

The Culturalist: Odin, Frøya, Sleipner, Hugin, Munin, and Yggdrasil give you considerably more cultural depth than the average snowflake sweater.

The Outdoor Enthusiast: Substantial wool and heavyweight construction make this a cozy choice for cold ski days, winter outings, and the all-important après portion of the itinerary.

Elevated Casual Style: The crewneck shape is easy. The pattern definitely isn’t boring. Pair it with simple pants or denim and let 1994 handle the rest.

The Smart Shopper: This design already survived three decades, the vintage market, and generations of knitters. Trend anxiety seems unnecessary.

The Gift Giver: For someone who loves Norway, skiing, mythology, or Olympic history, this has a built-in story that makes the gift feel genuinely personal.

The Legacy Shopper: Few designs demonstrate staying power quite like one people continued searching for and recreating decades after its debut.

The Scandinavian Lifestyle Enthusiast: Norwegian craftsmanship, winter-sport history, Nordic color, and Norse mythology all converge in one exceptionally Scandinavian piece of knitwear.
